Frequently Asked Questions

What is counselling?
Counselling is a safe, confidential space where you can talk to a trained professional about issues you’re facing. It helps you explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours to gain clarity and work towards positive change.

How do I know if I need counselling?
If you're feeling overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, low, or are struggling with relationships or life transitions, counselling can help. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from it.

What issues can counselling help with?
Counselling can support you with a wide range of concerns including:

  • Anxiety and stress
  • Depression and low mood
  • Relationship or family issues
  • Grief and loss
  • Low self-esteem
  • Trauma or abuse
  • Life transitions (e.g., job change, separation)

What happens in a counselling session?
You’ll talk with your counsellor about what’s on your mind. Sessions typically involve exploring your feelings, thoughts, and patterns, while working toward goals you set together. The pace and focus are guided by your needs.

Is counselling confidential?
Yes. Everything you share is treated with strict confidentiality, with a few legal exceptions (e.g., risk of harm to yourself or others, acts of terrorism or money laundering). Your counsellor will explain confidentiality fully in your first session.

How long is each session?
Most sessions last for 50 minutes.

The number of sessions depends on your needs and goals—some people come for a few sessions, others for longer-term support.

Do I need a referral to start counselling?
No referral is necessary.

You can self refer by booking directly .

How do I choose the right counsellor?
It’s important to find someone you feel comfortable with.

You can ask about their qualifications, approach, and experience. Many counsellors offer an initial consultation to see if it’s a good fit.

Can counselling be done online or over the phone?
Yes. We offer flexible options including video or phone sessions, which can be just as effective as in-person support.  We will talk about suitability in our introductory session.

What if I don’t know what to talk about?
That’s completely okay. Your counsellor will help you feel at ease and guide the conversation.

Many people aren’t sure where to start—that’s part of the process.

It can feel strange sometimes as the sessions are led by you - that's OK and we will try to help you explore these feelings
